I miss all
you guys and the plein air painting. So guess, I have no one to motivate but me! So here I am!

Wanted to share with you all a great potential plein air possibility (actually a big project I've been working on that has consummed alot of my time)! I've created a "Women's Mexico Retreat" for journaling and watercolor sketching, April 12-17, 2009! It will encompass more than just painting, like yoga, writing exercises, Buddist meditation etc. but will be an experiential adventure. Right now air fares are WAY low (I spent $600 for my fare in June and now it is $378!) - great time to book. Anyway, ladies, if you are interested OR know of anyone interested, please pass on this blogsite (for updates, pricing, events etc.): http://www.womensmexicoretreat2009.blogspot.com/

Can't wait for our next outdoor paintout - where you WILL see me! Keep hibernating but, keep creating!

Namaste'
Elaine

Just in case you missed this by Robert Genn.

Recently Linda Menke of Sarasota, Florida, asked, "Is it expected or appropriate to send a thank-you note to the person who buys your painting? A local artist did this for us when we bought one of his. It felt nice. On the other hand, I have never sent one to a buyer of my own work. Is there an artists' etiquette in this matter?"

Thanks, Linda. This may seem a bit smug, but while collectors have been very kind to appreciate my art and keep me in bread, I've always thought I was the one doing them a favour. I don't think I've ever written and thanked a person for a purchase, even when it was the Queen. Maybe it's an artists' etiquette I'm not aware of.

On the other hand, something of genuine and permanent interest tucked in the back of the painting when it leaves the studio is often treasured by the buyer. Further, it gives the gallery a talking point and adds long-term value. All works of art don't lend themselves to this, but when there is something to say, it's an artist's way of thanking the Universe. Sharing that with a buyer is thanks enough.

I know it's a bit limp-brained and sentimental, but it's even fun to include "stuff." I've been known to tack a small zip-lock bag to the stretcher with a few pebbles from the stream in the painting, a feather from a passing grouse or a spare limpet (complete with the sniff-factor) from the beach. We've illustrated some examples that might be of value to you at the top of the current clickback.

One of the best items to find tucked into the back of a painting is a map. A photocopy, with an "X" where the work was painted, adds a treasure hunt to the art-buying event. Not a few buyers have tracked down the source of their paintings, even travelling to foreign countries.

Your works of art are an ever-changing record of your personal interests and growth. You don't want to trivialize or monetize the progress of that growth. Sensitive collectors know this. A genuinely-felt thought or observation--without going overboard--tucked away with the art, cements you to your vision and shares with others your hours of joy and struggle.

Trip to Europe

http://picasaweb.google.com/kaydenisedriver/Europe02#

A few photos...40 out of 550! It's FREE and simple to do. Just pick a simple user name to use & simple pass word. Example myslef@gmail.com . Our site is getting better all the time. As I learn more things I can do I will pass them along. I will try to develop a personel page for each of us soon. There you will be able to put in your bio, link's to your own selling page (if you so choose), paintings you would like to show etc.
Cheers
~Norm

A retro-guy takes a tentative step

OK. It WAS monumental cuz we'd been trying to go to Summer Joe's for year's (right, Norm?). And we actually made it - the glitch - Norm had just broken his leg in phenomenal acrobatic leap. I enjoyed the gardens but found the giant sunflowers there, the most intriguing. Kind of like big people gazing down into the garden.

But when I settled, I chose the orchard scene. I was attracted to the long shadows tossed across the path and the very white fence. Here's my attempt for the day in my journal - not my finest - but it captures ALL the feelings and warmth of the day. Late in Fall.
I went and painted plein air in the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. This was the fountain in the Rose Garden.
I love to use pastels for ease of use, colors, etc.
BUT ... as I found out when I made a trip to the restroom - just call me "Smudge" ... my face was COVERED in all kinds of pastel colors!
Fortunately not TOO MANY people had stopped to speak to me. :)
Oh ... now I know why they didn't stop to speak to me! HA!

Hope you enjoy this, and I (and others, I'm sure) are looking forward to YOUR stories and photos of Plein Air painting.
Click on the photo for a larger view.

~Jillian
http://www.JillianCrider.com

Welcome Plein Air Society of Southern Oregon

This is OUR blog, members can request to become editors.

Once approved you can post photos, artwork, and talk about all things art!

WELCOME to this part of our own cyber world.
